Katherine Canoeing

The wife and I had plans to go down to Katherine and do their dinner cruise, however the mechanics that replaced suzi’s radiator had other ideas. It appears that they did not replace the thermostat, which meant we got half way down and ended up leaking water and overheating. We called the AANT, and they came down to tow us. We ended up having to stay for Sunday night as well, so despite missing the dinner cruise we did get a chance to do some canoeing down Katherine Gorge.

AANT premium membership is highly worth it.

Due to the nature of the trip I wasn’t game to take my camera with me, but here is a one from a previous trip to Katherine Gorge.

Katherine Birthday Trip

Claire surprised me with a trip to Katherine staying at the new Cicada Lodge (or as she pronounces it, kick-arda). It was in January so we couldn’t swim anywhere there, but we took a boat trip down and got to see some of the Gorge itself.

I’m hardly used to staying in fancy resorts instead of a tent, but I really liked the place, and the food was really good. Here I am on the balcony… note actually the Melbourne is mine 😉

On the way back home we thought we stop at Edith. It was open, the second pool was available to swim in, and no one was there! It is usually a really popular spot, given it was open for swimming on a weekend, I was amazed that we were the only ones there.

Edith falls and dehydration

We decided to go down and stay at Edith Falls, it was in the build up, but we had plenty of water, and an easy accessible swimming hole, so we figured we’d be right.

We arrived and set up then spent the rest of the day in the lower pool, was a lot of fun. I really wanted to do the bushwalk and see see pool, but the trip (from memory) was about 10km. We took plenty of water, so much it hurt my back and I was drinking it just to lighten the load. I got a little concerned that Claire wasn’t drinking enough, and tried to get her to take more. The swim was great (if a little spooky – I am sure it was safe but that upper pool just LOOKS like a croc’s natural home) and we walked back and did the middle pool. The middle pool really is the best one, it’s such a nice spot.

I am sure you can guess the end of the story, nearly as soon as we got back to camp Claire wasn’t feeling that well and wanted to lie down. Soon I had packed up and we were heading back, stopping regularly for her. It just goes to show that despite drinking 2-3 litres of water and a few diet cokes on that trip, you just cannot underestimate these conditions.
