Channel Point adventure

Decided to head down to Channel Point to go blue water fishing for the weekend, have a camp and two days of fishing. Got amazingly lucky with the wind, I did not realise how much the boat ramp is affected by the slightest breeze.

Got down there on Saturday afternoon and launched in around 12 knots which was difficult but not too much worries. After the difficult launch I realised I had left the sounder in the car so we got to go back in. I was glad I had a poly anyway. Tried to fish the low for some Jewies on the shelf but got smashed by sharks and catfish. Plus a goldie, which was borderline, but we were in 6 metres so decided to let him go. Mud got the best of the sharks. Headed to one of the nearby islands where Alice got smoked off a lure, but we were unable to get them to bite and we were fast running out of light.

Camped the night, it is a pretty cool place, toilets and some cold showers. Had a really clear night for the stars, I think it dropped to around 9 degrees, really enjoyed it getting down that low.

Woke up the next morning. While we were getting ready Alice decided to go for a wander down at the magroves, came back holding a sizeable buck. She’s getting pretty good at chasing and catching them, little did we know that would be the best thing of the day…

We just got nothing! Hit some structure, hit some reefs marked on the map, never got a single bite. Hit the reef at about 2 metres casting some lures, got nothing. Didn’t even see a fish, even a small fish. Went back and saw some birds working a section, cast some lures but they were 20cm Blue Salmon. The wind was totally dead on Sunday, it was such a shame that there weren’t any fish in the ocean!

Got:
Me: Lots of sharks and catfish, 1 goldie, estimated 30cm
Alice: Lots of sharks, blue salmon, 1 nice mud crab
Mud: The biggest shark, catfish

Motor was acting pretty funny at the end, though it was pretty low in fuel. Anyway I won’t be fishing for a while 🙁 so I am going to get it serviced.

Kakadu and Litchfield without the camping

Did some serious kilometres with this one.

Had some friends from Queensland up, due to space in the car restrictions, we stayed in Jabiru for the night. We drove from Darwin to Maguk for a swim. We went to Ubirr for sunset, then to Jabiru to watch the mighty Kangaroos comeback against the evil Bombers. The next morning we went down to Bukbuluk, and spent most of the day in Gunlom. Afterwards we went to Ikoymarrwa, then onwards home. Stopped at Emerald Springs for dinner, it’s a pretty good roadhouse.

If you’re familiar with geography of Kakadu, you will see that we added about 300km needlessly by going back and forth, mostly because we wanted to see Ubirr at sunset, and stay in Jabiru. Next time I will stop at Ubirr on the way and stay at Cooinda. Much more sensible!

A few days later we went to Litchfield. Saw the usual spots – Florence, Wangi, Buley Rockpools in the termite mounds. But we spent most of the time in Tjaynera which was empty the majority of the time. Nothing better than an empty waterhole!

Went back to Mindle markets on that Thursday, there were some dolphins playing in the water at sunset entertaining the crowd. Pretty hard to photograph, but I did my best!

Trip to Kakadu, Gunlom and some lookouts

Claire and I had secured permits to go to Jarranbarnmi for the weekend, unfortunately a rogue crocodile had forced the Kakadu staff to cancel all permits. We decided to head to Gunlom again, we love it. Did the drive down old Jim Jim Road, was great fun. Got there Saturday arvo and spent it in the lower pool. Spent all of Sunday in the upper pools, GT and Ailsa joined us. Saw a large snake in one of the water pools, that provided a bit of amusement.

Got the fire going on Sunday night, far out the wood burnt quickly. Headed back on Monday and stopped by Gungural and Bukbukluk, Claire didn’t like the walk at Gungural. Liked Bukbukluk a lot better. The trip back was fine, a large tree had fallen across old Jim Jim road, managed to get around by going through the scrub. Okay for Suzi but would have hated to have been towing something.

Kakadu – Ubirr, Maguk, Ikoymarrwa

Claire and I arrived in Mardugal on Saturday and set up camp. Love that campsite, and we found wood easily. We went to Ubirr for the sunset, which is probably our favourite place in the territory. We then headed back for dinner and a few cold ones. There were a few fires on the drive back.

We spent Sunday in Maguk. We noticed that the midgees had eaten us alive, I think this is a common thing in June at any campground.

Maguk was great, there were quite a few bogans with eskies around, which was a shame, but they mostly kept to the top of the waterfall – although the signs indicated that they weren’t allowed there.

On the way home on Monday we stopped by Ikoymarrwa, it wasn’t marked on any maps, and this was the first time we had been there. It took a bit of finding… and the water was freezing!! Beautiful spot though.

Paradise Valley 2014

Paradise Valley again this year, the last one that the Gell’s will own. We got our canoeing trip it, it was freezing, I have become accustomed to the NT weather faster than I want to admit.

There isn’t much to say about it, it is always great fun.

Those canoe trips always take it out of me!
